This does not happen to me. I can see that you have larger thumbnails than the default. I think that the large thumbnails use too much memory, causing them to disappear. Since this is an exception, the error handling is not as elegantly as you might wish, causing them to be gone even after changing back to medium size again. That's my guess of what is happening.
